Train up a child the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6
I was raised in Clayton County and graduated from Jonesboro High School. FBJ was my church home for many years and I am excited to call this my church family again. I graduated from Georgia State University with a BBA in Hospitality Management, but I have always had a heart for children. It wasn’t until shortly after my youngest daughter was born that I knew God was calling me into full time Children’s Ministry. I have been blessed to be able to show the love of Jesus to children and their families for a little over a decade. I am honored to have this amazing opportunity to help raise up our next generation to know, love, and follow Jesus here at FBJ.
I am married to my wonderful husband, Kevin. We have two beautiful daughters, Kyla and Ava, as well as our four-legged ‘babies.’ I enjoy spending time with family and friends, cooking, and traveling.

God’s call on my life to ministry occurred as a teenager. Unknown to me, and 200 miles away, God was calling my wife, Isabel, to the same ministry. Meeting and marrying in college, we began our journey together, serving first in Arizona with the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. We were privileged to pastor several churches, to serve among the Ute Indians of Utah, and to be involved in church planting and revitalization. In 2001, we came to First Baptist Jonesboro to lead the Missions Ministry, which includes five language congregations. Beyond the mission aspect of my call, I work closely with our Senior Pastor to give leadership to the FBJ staff.
Isabel and I are blessed with two daughters and sons-in-law, and eight grandchildren, all of whom live in their native Texas.
I’m Mel Blackaby. The Lord has given me the great privilege of being the Sr. Pastor of First Baptist Jonesboro. It is a calling that I take very seriously. I am convinced that God’s great salvation is intensely personal, but it was never meant to be private. That is why I challenge every believer to live out his or her faith within the family of God and before a watching world.
Jesus is our focus; He is the Lord of our lives and the head of our church. We believe He has given us a mission to “glorify God by making disciples who invest in other people and impact the nations.” That is why we take the study of God’s Word seriously. That is why we are actively reaching out to people in our community. That is why we are planting churches and involved in mission partnerships around the world.
It is our prayer that every person who walks onto our campus feels the presence of God and the love of His people. And as God adds to our number, we receive them as a gift from God. So join us as we do “life together” at First Baptist Jonesboro.
I am married to my awesome wife Maru and the dad to two great daughters Katherine and Rachael. In my spare time, when I can find it, I enjoy fishing. If the South Carolina Gamecocks are playing, you’ll probably catch me in front of the television rooting for them!

I am called of God to be a shepherd in the local church, using the ministry of music to encourage all people to live out Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Believing He is worthy of our best, I strive to call on His Spirit to enable me to use my gifts and talents to develop a diverse ministry through which all kinds of people can individually and collectively develop and employ their musical talents for the purpose of glorifying and enjoying God.
